Canadá consigue primera medalla de oro en los Paralímpicos de PyeongChang 2018
REDACCION ST.- El canadiense, Mac Marcoux, de 20 años, que compite con guía por sus problemas visuales, ganó la primera medalla de oro para Canadá en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Invierno que se viene desarrollando en PyeongChang 2018, Corea del Sur, en Esquí alpino-discapacidad visual. Marcoux fue guiado en la competencia por Jack Leitch.
Marcoux, debutó en las Olimpiadas de Sochi, ganado una medalla de oro y dos de bronce. En los Mundiales de 2017, conquistó cuatro oros y una plata.
Los Juegos Paralímpicos de Pyeongchang alzarán el telón el pasado viernes 9 de marzo, y lo bajarán el 18.
Durante nueve días, 670 deportistas de 42 países lucharán por subir al podio en 80 pruebas. El programa paralímpico lo forman seis deportes: esquí alpino, esquí nórdico, biatlón, snowboard, curling en silla de ruedas y hockey sobre hielo.
La delegación canadiense está integrada por 55 atletas.
Marcoux, comenzó a perder la visión cuando tenía ocho años a consecuencia de la enfermedad de Stargardt, y a los 9 años ya estaba ciego. La enfermedad de Stargardt es una distrofia macular, en la mayoría de casos se heredan de forma autosómica recesiva. La disminución de visión que produce esta enfermedad afecta habitualmente a personas jóvenes.
Stargardt es una enfermedad ocular hereditaria que se caracteriza por una degeneración macular, la mácula es la zona central de la retina dotada de la máxima sensibilidad que permite la visión fina de los detalles.
