Honouring Shared Legacy and Remembrance: LASC at the Canadian-Lebanese Remembrance Ceremony
By Capt Rey Garcia-Salas.- The Latin American Soldiers Committee (LASC) had the distinct honour of participating in the Canadian-Lebanese Remembrance Ceremony, a solemn and deeply meaningful event held at the National Military Cemetery of Canada inside the Sacred Space Room.
It was a privilege to stand alongside the Lebanese Canadian community, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, distinguished guests, families, and veterans as we collectively paid tribute to Canadians of Lebanese heritage who have served this country with honour and courage. The ceremony was masterfully guided by Nick McCarthy, a proud LASC member and Beechwood Cemetery’s Marketing, Heritage, and Historian lead.
One of the most poignant moments was the presence of the parents of Trooper Marc Hani Diab, who gave his life in Afghanistan while proudly wearing the Canadian uniform. Their strength, dignity, and unwavering devotion to preserving their son’s legacy profoundly moved everyone in attendance. Their participation reminded us that behind every member of the Canadian Armed Forces stands a family whose love, sacrifice, and courage extend far beyond the battlefield.
The ceremony was further enriched by the heartfelt spiritual guidance of Chaplain Capt Kennedy Matande, whose words of reflection brought comfort, unity, and purpose to the gathering. His message emphasized the importance of collective remembrance and the healing power of shared stories.
Throughout the event, a powerful theme resonated across all speeches: the importance of continuing to recount and honour the contributions of Canadians whose origins span every corner of the globe. These stories are essential to understanding our shared history. By keeping them alive, we ensure that the sacrifices made in the name of peace and freedom are never forgotten. The dedication and bravery of these individuals helped build the safe, prosperous, and inclusive Canada we know today, while strengthening bonds with our Allies.
As LASC, we were honoured to see the organizers, including Commodore Sam Sader, Honorary Colonel Omar AbouZaher, and their dedicated team, adopt and implement the strategic frameworks and ceremonial structures that LASC has developed and refined since 2022. Seeing these practices thoughtfully integrated into this ceremony reaffirmed the positive impact of our work and our shared commitment to inclusive remembrance traditions across Canada.
The ceremony was conducted with dignity, precision, and profound respect. Values at the heart of the LASC mission. It was a privilege to lay a wreath on behalf of the Latin American community and to stand in solidarity with our Lebanese Canadian brothers and sisters in honouring these stories of service, heritage, and sacrifice.
Remembrance united us.
Service transcended borders.
Together, we ensured every sacrifice was honoured and every story remembered.
